The San Francisco 49ers could hardly have asked for a better start to the 2026 NFL season.
In front of a massive crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, San Francisco defeated the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in a game that was historic before the opening kickoff even took place.
This was the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia. By the final whistle, it had also become a convincing statement from the 49ers.
Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes, the San Francisco defense repeatedly stopped the Rams when it mattered most, and the 49ers turned a competitive opening into a comfortable victory.
For fans, this was not simply another Week 1 result. It was a memorable beginning to the 2026 San Francisco 49ers season.
A Historic Night in Melbourne
There was already plenty of attention surrounding the matchup before San Francisco and Los Angeles took the field.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground welcomed 100,021 fans, creating an extraordinary atmosphere for the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia.
The international setting also added another layer to an NFC West rivalry that is already familiar to NFL fans.
The Rams briefly looked capable of making the game uncomfortable for San Francisco. Kyren Williams gave Los Angeles the lead with a five-yard touchdown run.
But the 49ers quickly changed the direction of the game.
San Francisco responded with its own offensive rhythm and eventually took complete control.
By the end of the night, the scoreboard read 49ers 27, Rams 7.
Brock Purdy Starts the Season With a Big Performance
If there was one player who immediately stood out for San Francisco, it was Brock Purdy.
The 49ers quarterback finished the game with 205 passing yards and three touchdown passes. More importantly, he continued attacking after throwing an early interception.
That resilience was important.
Instead of allowing the mistake to change the game, Purdy helped San Francisco establish control through a combination of accurate passing and smart decision-making.
His touchdown passes also showed the variety available in the 49ers offense.
Demarcus Robinson provided the explosive play with a 39-yard touchdown against his former team. Mike Evans added another score, while Deebo Samuel finished the scoring through the air with a 15-yard touchdown.
For a quarterback entering a new season with considerable expectations, it was an encouraging opening performance.
The 49ers Found the Formula on Offense
The most impressive part of San Francisco’s performance was not simply the number of points on the scoreboard.
It was the way those points were created.
The 49ers did not need to rely exclusively on Brock Purdy.
Christian McCaffrey produced 68 rushing yards, while Kaelon Black added 65 yards on the ground. As a team, San Francisco finished with 379 total yards.
That balance forced the Rams to defend the entire field.
When Los Angeles focused on the passing game, San Francisco could run the football. When the Rams tried to slow the ground attack, Purdy had multiple receivers capable of making plays.
That type of offensive balance could become one of the biggest strengths of the San Francisco 49ers throughout the 2026 NFL season.
San Francisco’s Defense Won the Important Moments
The 49ers offense may have received most of the headlines, but the defense was arguably just as important.
Matthew Stafford completed 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards, and the Rams struggled to consistently convert opportunities.
One sequence particularly demonstrated the difference between the two teams.
Los Angeles reached a critical fourth-down situation near the goal line. Rather than settling for a field goal, the Rams attempted to extend the drive.
The 49ers defense stopped Stafford’s quarterback sneak.
Instead of allowing the Rams to close the gap, San Francisco protected its lead and continued moving toward victory.
Those are the moments that often determine divisional games.
The 49ers did not simply accumulate statistics. They made key stops when the Rams needed them most.
A Difficult Opening for the Rams
The result was particularly frustrating for Los Angeles because the Rams did have opportunities.
Kyren Williams provided the team’s only touchdown, while Puka Nacua led the Rams in receiving with 74 yards.
But Los Angeles could not maintain enough offensive momentum to keep up with San Francisco.
The Rams also struggled to convert third downs and failed to capitalize on crucial fourth-down opportunities.
Once the 49ers established a double-digit advantage, the game began to slip away.
For San Francisco, that was exactly the type of situation the team wanted to create.
An International Win With Extra Meaning
The location of this game made the result even more memorable.
The NFL has spent years expanding its international presence, and Australia represented a major new market for regular-season football.
For the San Francisco 49ers, being part of that moment gave the franchise an opportunity to introduce itself to a new generation of fans.
The 49ers also had to deal with the unique challenges of international travel and a significant time-zone difference.
San Francisco arrived in Melbourne earlier than the Rams, giving the team additional time to adjust before kickoff.
Whether that preparation directly influenced the result is impossible to measure.
But once the game started, the 49ers looked comfortable.
The 49ers Have Plenty to Celebrate
A historic international game deserves memorable fan gear.
